I'll try and dig up a wiring diagram for you.

If you have spark coming from the coil then the points are working, it would have to be somewhere in the cap or rotor if it is not getting out of the distributor.

I got my alt. tested and its good. so, im gonna hook it back up wednesday, and that wire going to the starter/battery area, is coming off a positive portion of the alt, so Im gonna hook it up to the positive side of my starter. See if it excites it and starts charging. if it doesnt, my voltage regulator is shot, if thats the case Im getting a custom gm marine one wire for the boat and saying to hell with regulators and wires lol. After re installing the alt wednesday Im gonna replace the fuel filter and ass some new gas in there, and try to see if it sparks. If not... lol, Ill go get a new cap and rotor, even though these look new. better safe than sorry.

Husker... first off, thanks for the remendous help. If my dwell wasnt right.... being around 0-1 is all opposed to 60ish, couldnt that cause my engine to overheat easily? due to the amount of spark being produced?

It doesn't make your spark last longer, it just leaves the points closed longer or shorter. And actually a dwell of 0-1 the points are only closed for up to 1 degree of crank rotation. So it may not be able to be making a good charge(for lack of a better word), and therefore not giving you a real strong spark.

When the points are closed it charges the primary side of the coil, and then when they open it breaks the field causing a surge in the secondary coil, which in turn creates your spark. If the points don't stay closed long enough then you don't build enough charge and have a weak or nonexistent spark.

Hmm, So with the dwell set to 0-1 my spark was basically nil, so could tha have been why it fell on its face after 1200-1300 rpm? The spark was being blown out? not being strong enough?..

Well, thanks for that info. I re installed the alt. and I have an electrical issue now haha. At the battery I have 12.7v and at the B+ on the alternator its only at 9.4v. So Im kinda upset. What Im going to do is buy a new voltage regulator, a 2 wire one, as opposed to the 3 wire one I have, I dont know what this third wire is for and neither does the alt guy. Im going to bypass it entirely. This way I have a field wire, and a switched 12v hooked to the regulator and the B+ on the alt directly to the battery/starter. Also Starting tomorrow I am cleaning up all the wiring on the engine. Almost every wire has at least one crimp some have 4-5 crimps...for what I dont know. So Im going to do away with those and replace with the ones that need it with the right color wire and have it be one solid line lol. Ill have it done soon I hope, Should be nice weather from here on in so Im hoping for the best. I have a complete wiring schematic on the boat and Im going to trace all the wires and make sure everything is the way its suppose to be.

Not to sound dumb, But I thought setting the points was setting the dwell, I thought that was the same thing? Do I need to set the points and the dwell seperately somehow? We just tested with a dwell meter at the dizzy and adjusted it to read 60ish and that was it, threw it back together... Am I missing something?

Ya it pretty much is, I think that setting the points is kind of your initial setting then you fine tune it with dwell.

Well, Started getting into the wiring, and its all ass backwards, I dont know wtf the guy was thinking who did this, but they added a ton of new wires and moved wires, and crimped wires into other wires its insane. The friggin ignition system was backwards entirely, honestly have no Idea how it even ran, No joke. The coil was backward the points were on a positive lead. It was a joke, the boat has the factory harness with all the factory wires, I dont know what the hell was going through the mind of the guy who did it, But Im tearing into fully tomorrow and starting from the front and moving my way back

Got it all wired properly and running again, I hooked it up to a hose on my hose port right before the impeller, For the amount of water that was being put into the engine, I didnt see that same amount coming out at all, It was still getting hot too and quickly, Im now thinking I have a blockage somewhere. Im going to set the timing tomorrow and grab my compressor and start checking for blocked coolant lines. All my plugs were gapped wrong, and all the wiring was ass backwards, Everything works now and works properly, Except for my cooling portion of the engine, lol. Well tomorrow once its timed Im going to get into the copper coolant lines and check for blockages.. On a digital timing light, I should just have to set the light to 12, and with it flashing on my crank pulley I should flash on the 0 right? for tdc?
