Emissions testing BS!

So,as far as I am aware, only Ontario,British Columbia and 34 of 50 states require emission testing. As for Ontario's emission testing, only southern Ontario is required, while central and northern Ontario are exempt.

I am basically out in the sticks, more than 100km away from Toronto, yet I'm required to emission test my vehicles every 2 years. Now,you literally walk across the street from me,and you do not require an emission test. Why? As the representative from the Drive Clean program told me,it all comes down solely to your postal/zip code.

Not only that, but 1987 and earlier vehicles are emissions exempt in areas that require testing. 1988-2003 models require e-tests for the remainder of their life until they reach 30 years old, which then makes them applicable as Historic vehicles.

This annoys me.My truck is a 1988. It's 20 years old. So shouldn't that be emissions exempt? Apparently not, because in 1988,all manufacturers started putting more stringent emission controls equipment on their vehicles.

So,last week,I spent over $800 getting my truck fixed to pass safety inspection. I rigged up a half assed exhaust with no cat because as far as I knew,20 years old and a 1988 model would be emissions exempt.

When I went to the MTO office to register my truck, they told me I needed an emissions test and Lance and I argued that it's 20 years old and doesn't need one. The lady gave me a card to call the Drive Clean hotline where I promptly questioned and argued with them for about 20 minutes.

Now,because of all this bullshit government crap,I now have to go and spend MORE money,to fix my exhaust, give my truck a complete tune up and yet still probably have it fail. After it fails, there is a $450 repair cost limit to say you attempted to fix the vehicle, and they give you a conditional pass, but the conditional pass isn't valid if you're selling or transferring the vehicle.

So,what's the deal in this? Why am I,and many other Ontarians and British Columbians subjected to this government cash grab? Why are Americans in 34 of 50 states required to test their emissions, while the rest of the country doesn't have to?

Why even test them at all? Why don't they either test eveything and everyone,or not do it at all? Vehicles have emissions controls components on them from the factory and they do their job. They make more of a deal about emissions 'safety' and 'concerns' then they do about anything else. Stuff like this irritates me to no end. I am extremely frustrated, because this stupid program is causing me so much grief right now. My truck is fully certified for the road, yet cannot pass emissions right now,so I can't get licence plates for it until it passes, yet I am allowed to drive it around with 10 day permits on it. Really,I could keep doing that and never get it e-tested and keep driving this big polluting vehicle around and nobody can do anything about it until I get pulled over and have my vehicle randomly spot checked.

This is such crap.

Your input?

Ha ha and then theres me.... Etest #5 will be coming soon. I agree that its stupid. In 2007 they decided that the 20 year exemption that used to take place was to be cancelled. So anything 20 years old in 2007 does not require an etest ever but everything that was not 20 in 2007 will always require one until it is considered historic. My Volvo is a 1987 and is exempt from it. One part I really hate is there IS a $450 conditional pass where if your vehicle does not pass after up to $450 in repairs then it is just granted a pass. I unfortunately am not included in that because that is only people who are retesting a vehicle that hey themselves have passed before. In other words when a vehicle changes owners it must pass an etest and there is no way around it.

I am contemplating registering it to my cottage up north? No etest there so how illegal would it be to do that?

You would have to prove that, that is your main living address and your drivers lience and all other I.D. would have to have that address plus if you have a cottage it is only usable for 8 months of the year if you have a main living place. I have a cottage up in utterson and tryed to do the same thing and in the end it will cause you more money and trouble than you think as the cottage you have is probably registered as a second seasonal dwelling not your main residence.

Wow that sucks bigtime. I know in NY all 95 and earlier are exempt from emissions and dont have to be plugged into the computer to check for engine trouble codes.

95 and earlier?! What the hell is the point of testing NEW cars with NEW,properly functioning emissions systems? CASH GRAB!

THAT is blatant BS right there.

Yah thats NY for you. If they had to do testing on older vehicles 3/4 of the vehicles on the road right now would be parked.
