I have been using google to come up with ideas to have my tailgate swing sideways.. Anybody have any idea? i already looked into the factory brackets to move then. they don't go 90% im thinking a like an 80 suburbans or a astro the open sideways to use for hing's..

toddluck had one on one of his old trucks i believe. or go check out the Honda Ridgeline. they (used to anyway) swing down like a regular gate, and also have another handle to swing that bitch sideways too.

I think some of the older domestic station wagons used to have dual choice rear gates.

So that might be something to look for in a scrapyard somewhere.

No idea how you could do a dual swing gate on a mazda but that would be pretty sick if you could. Because of the clearance between the tail gate and the tail light I could only get mine to swing about 30 degrees before it started pushing the tail light sideways. Now if you had shaved tails and could create a cavity for the gate to occupy I think you could reliably get 60 degrees of swing using the stock gate hinges (which is what I did)

Farfegnugen doesn't want his tail to swing both ways.

Probably a good thing, LOL.

if you designed some hinges you wouldn't have to use tailgate hinges for opening it. you could do a trunk style hinge, where the trunk lid has to go up and swing around the rest of the body and the weatherstrip area. kick it 90 degrees down and you've got a tailgate that swings out and around the light.

I couldn't find the posts he made explaining it, but this guy cut his gate in half & hinged both sides so it opens like van doors. He had some really good info on the side swing. Here is his name/profile.

to get 90+ degrees out of the tail gate swinging side ways it will require you using a hinge simular to that of a flush fit bed cover.... the hinges make a 90 degree turn before it makes the actual hinge... but im sure the hinge point would be exposed.... unless you can figure a way to get it to where the hinge is hidden behind the lip of the gate.... i dunno just rambleing on really... dunno if that would work or not just my idea...

is the type of hinge im thinking of.....
