um,I actually looked into it like a year or so ago. For an immigrant to get a green card,they need to apply for one,and the US only issues 50 000 green cards per year. Canada is inelgible right now because more than 50 000 people have immigrated in the last 5 years.
The US has what they call the "green card lottery." Basically,as i I said with the 50 000 green card limit,everyone that has applied for one that is eligible for green card status in that calendar year is randomly selected from the green card pool.
I'm still looking up the info online right now,but I think there is a thing where if you already have existing US resident family/friends,they are able to sign a card for you and you don't necessarily have to go through the entire application process or something.
