so got through my first week of work...everything's going good. My supervisor is really cool, and I work with this awesome old guy. Its fun, haha. This old guy has so many funny stories, lol
I also applied at the local Nissan dealership for a Lot attendant and Parts Consultant, since they have an opening for both positions. I'm hoping they call this week.
I've also been thinking about how I'm getting the money to move...the whole time I'm working to save money,I'll probably be spending much more just to keep surviving here as it is,hence having no savings left over to put away. I think I might just have to go to the bank and see what they can do for like a $2000 loan. It's a relatively small loan,so I don't think it'll hurt me too bad with the interest. I'm just working right now to pay off $700 on my Visa.
If I keep working to save,it'll be the middle of winter before I get out there, and ideally,I'd like to show up before winter sets in,especially out there.
What do you guys think? Keep working and put away $50-100/wk or whatever I can afford, til I have $2000 saved up,or see about getting a loan? $2000 will give me about a month's worth of expenses to survive on,and my Visa will be used to travel through the states and rack up on fuel, food and a hotel.

glad to hear you got through the week alright and i would say just dont use the credit card too much because i know many people who have gotten in trouble with their credit cards

I like to use my credit card like a debit card. I use it to establish and maintain credit, and whenever I use it,I pay it off right away.
I just put $50 towards it today,so,slowly but surely getting there. Hope to put another $50-75 on it this pay day.
I just want to use the credit card through the States to avoid having to exchange cash, and it'll be easier for if I'm just using it for large purchases like gas. I have a 2100 mile drive to make and I have to go through Michigan,Illinois,Minnesota and North Dakota, plus a little bit of Saskatchewan and then cruise into Alberta.

Just an update. My job is going well. It's nothing spectacular, but hey,it's a job and a paycheck.
I am considering flying out to Calgary for a week around the middle of September to look for apartments,as I've been searching online for some, and to look for jobs as well.
If all goes well in that week if I do go out,I plan to be moved out there by the end of October.
I inquired about a $2500 loan at the bank the other day and they said they don't deal with loans under $5000,so they suggested I apply for a line of credit, which I was denied because I don't have enoigh credit history, but they did raise my Visa limit from $1000 to $3000. Although my interest rate is 19%, it's probably better off than a loan from elsewhere.
I don't expect to borrow any money from family as I am still owing my grandparents $4000 against my Cadillac, and they just paid for my schooling and living expenses for the past 6 month,so they're out $15 000 from me and I owe my mom $600 on her line of credit.
I'm not expected to pay my schooling and living costs back to my grandparents, but I am expected to pay back the car loan.
I am really excited about moving.Everyone I've brought it up to thinks its the best thing for me to do right now. If all else fails,I always have a home to come back to.

Sounds like a pretty good plan Mike. Hope everything works out alright. Sounds like you have figured out the job - its a "paycheck". Will have 4 guys starting a "small" abatement project on Tuesday LOL. 4,900 linear foot of asbestos window caulk! Most of the work will be done in a 60-80' lift. The basic idea is hang onto the air powered caulking cutter for 8 hours a day (loud and vibrates like an impact wrench). Will probably take the 4 of them at least a month to get it all out. On the up side, they get $33.01 per hour.
It's a pay check

Because its so hazardous or cause they are "journeyman"? Or are they journeyman? So that what you do, abatement, huh?
Mikey, kudos on stepping up and making something of yourself! Be proud of doing things the right way. Such as planning things out and making your money situation work out well to not go under or end up in the hole.
Do some sight seeing in the states you pass through! I hear North Dakota is a really scenic place to see some good country!

Definately do some sight seeing. The Dakotas and the Rockies in general are beautiful!!!! I would say come thru Davenport, IA for a nites stay but besides the river boats, there isn't that much to see LOL.

That sounds like a pretty crazy job, especially with the asbestos. Hell, for $30/hr,I'd do that too.
When I drive out there,it'll probably be very late september at he earliest,or probably October. On my drive out there,I'll be going alone, but I'll probably want to just get out to Calgary as fast as possible. However,I do have friends in each state I'll be driving through that I'd like to stop and see if I have time.
I'd definetly love to come through Iowa, but I think that's a bit out of my way as I'll be cutting through Wisconsin from Illinois.
It's a 34 hour drive apparently,so I think it's going to take me about 4 days to get out there if I drive 8 hours a day.

Damn... Im beat after a 5 hour drive to Indy. At least I get a few days rest before I come back home. Eight hours a day for 4-5 days straight I think would kill me. But... on the other hand my uncle is an over the road truck driver and has been for years. I guess it can be done.
