Sounds like you may just have a little blockage somewhere in the carb that sudden burst by holding the choke open may have cleared it it could have been as little a spec of dust on those retard carbs.

Basically what Kris said. There was something stuck somewhere. Its supposed to create a very high vacuum for a short time to suck any crap out. I did it twice before it made a difference. The second time I held it until it nearly died. Seemed to do the trick. I've been driving ti with no issues yet other than my battery being about dead on the first run from starting it so many times without running it very long.
