I went to Wyotech. It's really a you'll get out of it what you put in kinda thing. You won't learn everything, but I wish I had tried harder and taken more advantage of all the resources while I was there.

I'm sorry, but if anyone actually listens to someone tell them not to go to school, then doesn't go, (Because we all know that's the 'hardcore' way to go, you can't be cool if you go to school) then the person listening automatically becomes as much of a douchebag as the advice giver.

I went to NADC (Nashville Auto Diesel College) from jan 04 to about April of 05. I took the autobody courses with the additional high performance fabrication class. That school is really expensive. Was it worth it? its hard to say. Did i get a job - yes after about 2 weeks out and after sending out resumes all across the state of tennessee. I actually landed the job that i wanted - working in a Chevrolet dealership. The money is still working its way up to where i want it. The school was very informative in my opinion and yea there was alot of bull s^&t but i always keep my head up and tried to make the best of it. I walked out of there iwht every award they offered and had perfect attendance. I wasnt one of those fortunate enough to come from an underprivilaged life - so that school was paid for by my parents about 90% unlike most of the ones attending - and youll notice probably wherever you go - the ones that get the grants and scholarships and free rides more or less are the ones who down talk the school and bitch. In the fabrication classes it wasnte so much what i was learning how to do - it was me laerning what i really am capable of doing. It changed the way i think about making the minitruck dreams i have work. I never toured UTI or Wyotech. I kinda wished i had but - man - every school is gonna be about the same in the end. Its all what you want it to be. I got everything out of that school I wanted - I learned how to weld better, painted my truck, bagged it, sheet metaled my bed, and learned alot about the way this profession works. Do your homework on these schools. And try to talk to students at those schools if and when you take a tour. just my two cents - goodluck - later - josh almost forgot - i met some of the best friends ive ever had there too.

well as far as on the job training goes, you might as well go to school. sure youll learn what to do and make a lil money while your at it. but from my experience{i worked my way up in a shop} youll take a few years to learn what you will in a 18 month school course. because peeps that own shop are out to make money, not hold your hand teaching you. so if your young enough to do so, go to school. youll be just a lil bit further than most who learn on the job. and by the way, i went aheadand started at wyotech this year for chassis fab and interior trim. every lil bit helps. no one in this business every stops learning, so do everything you can while you can. imo.

flowdaddy and pocket lint, couldn't have said it better. I've worked in the automotive business for about 9 years, at a Honda dealership as a Honda tech, and I'm damn good at fixing cars. I originally applied for a position in the bodyshop (Where I had zero experience, but that was what I really wanted to do) under the impression that I could do just what the 'hardcore' people are saying, learn with on the job exp. and have someone teach me... I kept applying there the ENTIRE TIME I worked at Honda. I applied at bodyshops all over the city I lived and worked in, no dice. Long story short, the whole reason they wouldn't hire me, was I had zero experience! They hired young guys most of the times, over me, that had gone to tech schools (Or had experience).. That in itself tells me that, yeah, it might just be a 'piece of paper' but employers see that as evidence that the person they are looking at has a little something more than joe blow from the street who turns wrenches in his dad's garage on his buddies cars, and the above statement is correct, shops are out to make money, not hold someones hand until they're ready. I know this from personal experience. Sometimes I'm sure guys get lucky, with a friends shop, or someone really nice, who really needs a warm body to sweep the floor, but in most everybody's real world, it's not that simple.
Point of story, if you have the opportunity, GO TO SCHOOL, don't dick around like a lot of hacks I know who don't have and never will have great jobs.

darryl is right.if you slack your way through it you get much out of it. I went to wyotech a few years back and saw people who never touched a vehicle turn out eye catching work and people with years of experience refresh skills and expand there abilities. If i had the chance i would do it all over again.

wyotech is pretty shitty. But i will say this. It was a complete joke for the first 9 months i was there. But then i started the chassis fab and high performance engine class and it makes all the other bullshit you have to deal with worth it. The teachers in that class made you learn and taught us a lot about whatever we wanted to know. All of my other teachers just made it seem like it was there job but in that class they actually wanted to be there. I dont know of too many guys that would come in a couple hrs early and stay a few hours late so that we could get our projects done but they did. Other than that the school does suck. The cops are assholes and all of the locals and dicks to any techers. It all goes back to the saying you get out of it what you put into it. Joel, you hated it from the get go so i can understand. Plus leaving and havin to come back to another class had to be pretty shitty. I think you did it just so you could be with that faggot kid again
