Sorry to hear about your buddy's wreck.
I am here to clear up some myths since I have a Auto Sales License in the state of California and have sold cars before.
1.)The dealership is required to make a copy of your current insurance card when you purchase a vehicle showing that you have current insurance which gets turns in with the paperwork to the finance company.
2.)The dealership is not obligated to notify the insurance company of the new vehicle, that is the customer's job but I do know that the finance company typically stays on top of that and will charge you for insurance if the customer let's it expire, although since he said he only had the truck two months they probably still haven't checked into it. I have seen banks take over two months to finalize a auto loan because of some minor paperwork issue which is not usual.
3.)Dealerships do not sell auto insurance typically. Although in Southern California some of them may, but let's just pray to god that this guy had some kind of GAP Insurance because he is still going to be fucked if he did have insurance because his insurance company is only going to pay "true market value" not the financed amount.
Good Luck.
i appreciate all of your guys inout and comments, im pretty sure that his best bet is to part it out because i think someone mentioned that you cant sell a truck without a title and that is absolutely correct, the truck is fucked and i thikn i forgot to mention he was drunk and blew a 2.8, its also his second DUI, he seems to learn lessons the hard way, thanks again for all the comments, its given him a lot of info, would the lien holder come after the truck if he were to sell it and stop paying for it or do they just take it as a loss because there is no insurance to pay it off?
the lein holder is going to come after him, also his credit is going to be FUCKED!
if he has a loan on it he's still gonna have to pay off the loan amount regardless of what he gets outa it. its still gonna be listed as a repo if he dont come up with the full amount of the loan pretty quick or continue to pay the payments til its paid off. by having a loan thou he cant sell the title.
this is why I absolutely dont give two shits for people who drive drunk. A .28 (not a 2. is way too excessive! In the state of FL, if you blow over a .30, you have to be medically cleared at a hospital before going to jail because the intoxication level is dangerously high. Fkn idiot, glad no innocent bystanders got hurt.
Anyone thinking that engine and tranny is good just because the front end damage is not too bad better think again. Its the drive shaft had to do one of 2 things. Either it ripped itself quite violently away from the tranny or it speared itself into the tranny like a dart. Anything truck that goes through that much trauma can have more damage than what is seen. Might as well sell it for scrap get your couple hundred bucks and add that to the next payment. Hope somebody learned their lesson about drinking and driving now that they are gonna be in a nice finacial bind for the next few years.
just set the axle straight and rock that BITCH!

oh so he was drunk when it happened. Okay now i have a new outlook on the situation. I hope he gets fucked over and can't sell a single part off of that truck and he gets his license taken away for a long time and he has to spend a lot of time in jail. Sounds crude but i have no pity for drunk drivers, if nothing good happens to him in this situation then i'll be happy because he gets what he deserves
fuck drunk drivers

what a dumb-ass.
I retract of my offer to buy it. I hope he gets fucked in the ass over the deal.
