mine got like 20 to 25 mpg but had no power and surged like crazy when you tried to hold it at a steady speed no one would work on it so i sold it for $300 bucks

I read an article in Diesel Power that said that the 6.5's are really good motors. The article said if you are looking for big power, they are not the way to go. However, it stated that they are very dependable motors that last a long time. My brother has one in '96 that has more than 100k miles. The only big repair has been the injection pump.

The earlier models were prone to a few problems, cooling, pmd failure, injection pumps. Mine is a 99 and the problems were addressed by then. Mine has 160k on it and runs awsome. Just got back from a run to south carolina pulling a 40ft gooseneck with no probs. No its not a race engine, but be serious, its older technology. Ive seen many with 300k+ on them.

They still make the 6.5. There is a company that bought the rights to the 6.2 and 6.5 and makes kind of a hybrid of the two motors. AM general uses them in the hummers. They take the best parts of the two and put them together. You can buy a crate motor from them. I think there around 330 horse if I'm not mistaken.

But a 6.2 with the banks turbo kit has more power then a stock 6.5 turbo.
