i found this 5 page thread on s10forum, and read every bit of it.. we see pics like these all the time but this one has a story to it so it gets much worse, here's the original post:
"im sharing this with you guys to drill it into your heads to be VERY VERY careful about where you bring your truck and your hard earned money for work.i know this is long, but i suggest reading it. it was an absolute horror. people who know me know that im not known to make up shit or lie and whatever and im not trying to bash or flame anyone or start any wars, so im not gonna mention the name of the shop who did this to me. just use your imagination.
anyway, a couple months ago, i brought my truck to a guy i knew who owns a shop here in nj. a pretty reputable one too. theyve done some magazine feature trucks in the past, and are definitely capable of doing quality work. so i didnt think much of it. now, i try to do as much of the custom work on my truck as i possbly can, but some of it is out of my realm, and i dont always have the time or resources to do it all myself. so my good friend dave at afterhours fabrication is the one who usualy does all the fancy stuff for me (i have NEVER had any problems with him or his work whatsoever) but this time, i brought it elsewhere because dave was way overbooked, and didnt have any time to do anything on short notice, and was leaving for indy at the time i wanted to have all this shit done. the whole point was so i could drag my truck around at low rollers. at that time, it was pretty low, but not draggable. i needed to have my gastank raised and a little xmember work done. nothing major, but nothing i wanted to tackle myself.
so, i was chatting with this guy i knew for a little while about it. he said he could do it for me the night before low rollers if i brought it by early. i knew dave couldnt do it so i said **** it. and took a chance. i brought it over there early, and right off the bat, the guy was piss drunk working on someone elses truck when he said hed do mine. i didnt think much of it. figured he was just busy and whatever. he told me he could do it the night after low rollers and it would be done in a day or two at the most. we went over what hed be doing:
-make a new xmember to raise the gas tank and clear the drive shaft
-fix pinion problem
-make new xmember for carrier bearing
-modify trans xmember
-trim out the bed so my tires wont rub
bill came to $400 (i think. give or take) i was a nice guy and gave him half upfront and left him my truck.
i called him the day it was supposed to be done. he told me he needed another day or 2. he was busy.. blah blah blah.. he was so drunk i could hardly understand him. but whatever. i gave him some more time and called him again.. then he wanted another 2 days.. then another 2 days.. then another 2 days.. 2 WEEKS LATER he told me hed been working on it here and there and it was almost done but needed another couple days. EVERY TIME I TALKED TO HIM HE SAID IT WAS ALMOST DONE. he was blowing smoke up my ass. full of shit. i told him he could have another 24 hours. and id come get it. he said fine. itll be done. he also told me he was making me a drag bar (even though he originaly said i wouldnt need it) and it would cost me another $150! the next day, i talked to him and he said it was all finished and i could come get it. so i did.
i pulled up to his shop 2 hours later than the time he gave me cause he said he needed some extra time to let paint dry and shit, and to my horror, my truck was still sitting there unfinished. he barely did shit in the past 2 weeks. he was under it welding. when he got out from under it to greet me, i could see he was SO DRUNK HE COULD BARELY STAND THERE. he was slurring his words and was a total mess. i couldnt believe he was actualy working on someone elses shit in that condition. he made up a bunch of bullshit excuses for why it wasnt done, and since he was more than a 2 hour drive from me, i had to sit there and wait. i couldnt come back the next dayor anything.
i then started noticing shit as he was working. he put a huge gash in my freshly painted bed!! (later i found out he used my truck to haul around a load of boxtubing without my permission) and itd cost me several hundrud to fix. there was a stack of tickets in my passanger seat. he got them driving my truck!
-careless driving
-speeding
-driving with a suspended lisence
he told me he got those in someone elses truck, but i saw my info on the tickets. the inside of my truck was a mess. it looked like he was living in it! i looked at my odometer. he put over 200 miles on it! and broke a bunch of shit in the cab..
then i noticed he didnt even take my bed off like he was supposed to. he didnt even bother to raise my tank. he said he didnt need to, cause it didnt hang lower than the frame (which it obviously did) so he just cut a HUGE notch out of it so my drive shaft wouldnt hit (which it did anyway, you can see the rub in the picture) which later on caused it to bend. he was under there putting on the drag bar he said was already done that he charged me for. i ended up sitting there for 4 HOURS!! when he was done, i was so happy to be able to go home (had work the next day) that i payed him. i wish i didnt pay him!!! and this guy was drunk. he could baarely stand up without holding himself. he stunk like booze, and then INSISTED on taking my shit for a test ride!!
in conclusion.. i could tell my truck sat there untouched for 2 weeks, and then he just hacked it up as fast as he could on the last day. there was no question about that. an absolute nightmare. everything he said was a lie!! but the worst part didnt happen untill a couple days later when i noticed my truck was driving funny and brought it over to dave to put it on the lift and look it over. this is what we found, and unsafe truck:
-welds cracked
-1" gaps found filled with welds
-trans not even bolted in
-missing bed bolts
-crooked drag bar
-gastank xmember bent from the massive notch put in it.
-carrier bearring ghetto rigged and tacked onto a piece of half welded box tubing
-shit welded on that shouldnt be
-SLOPPY LOOKING WORK
-pinion not fixed
-tires rubbing on an uncut bed (he said they didnt rub, but was just too lazy to cut it)
now, this was a reputable shop. he just didnt want to take me seriously as a customer cause i was there for some small odds and ends and not a $10,000 bag and bodygdrop. bad buisness. everything is fine now, but i had to pay dave to fix shit that i already payed for! and he did a great job! everything works great! but i felt horrible even asking him to fix my mistake that i shoulda waited and have him do in the first place. i learned a valuable lesson here, and i hope that if you read this you did too."

He lives right around the way from me. He actually has a really clean truck to thats what sucks. All the work was fixed, and it looks damn good. Just sucks to hear shit like that happening to anybody.

So did you get any of your money back or what? I think I would be going to small claims and getting my dough back he seriously made that truck undriveable and dangerous

well just the story explains what shop that is. 200 extra miles on the odometer? shit thats nothing compared to the others. sucks becasue he does put out some great work when he wants to

holy shit....sorry to hear about that man....If it was me id be suing the shit outta them faster then fu#$. You could probably get your money back plus some. And i know if this was me id let everyone know who worked on my shit and what they did... peace man...
