well as you read before.. my wife posted about our emmisions problems... everything pasted except for the nox was just barely over... well everyone around this area said get a new cat... i did, well she went today and it failed again. well the nox actually went up slightly more and the Co was at 0 and the other stayed the same.. well now everyone says ERG, i got the haynes manual and a pump and went thru all the tests, i dont know where the erg temp sender is so i didnt test it, but the rest of the tests passed... the only questionalbe thing was at the start when i teed the pump in line with egr it was supposed to be no vac when cold and reving engine and it did move slightly while cold, and when warm it calls for about 5.9 vac when reved and it was about 1/2 that.... im really trying to not pay out the rear to get this fixed and she is really disapointed and feeling bad cause my truck isnt happening cause all the cash is going to her truck.. any help???

one more thing... i checked the codes first and it was long then short... o2 sensor, well i checked that and not sure if i was doing it correct, i warmed up and unplugged while running and checked across the 2 wires on the harness side? was that right, i read nothing as far as voltsdc.. would bad o2 sensor cause the nox to be slightly high?

well i just talked to someone that ownes a shop and he said i should have drove it 50 miles before i took it for testing.... drive 30-50 miles, let totally cool down, then warm up and test, says sees ppl fail 50% of the time getting tested right after cat replacement! also said as a safty put 1/2 tank gas and quart of denatured alcohol mix around for some miles and test, the alcohol cools the cyl walls...??? hell im willing to try about anything.if i was told to screw a goat i would!lol

Can't really help you because there is no emission crap like that here in Missouri. Most of my cars had no cat and only mufflers, plus eliminating the egr sometimes. That is about the only thing I like about this state. I do wish you luck though.

Gotta put some miles on the cat, also gotta be at the right temp to work efficiantly. The egr is what brings down the NOx. Can try to clean it. NOx is affected by engine temp, ignition timing, lack of regular maint causing friction. I think the alcohol mix might help a little Try to see if ign timing is off, might be a little too retarded and keep an eye on engine temp.

ok im now gonna check timing, i have never done this, well i got a light, found on the engine plate that it is 5deg +- 2 deg tdc, well i dont know what mark to use either the O or T on the engine timing marker, i found the notch on the pully, now do i count back 5 marks on the engine? there isnt 5 marks on the engine timing marker, the haynes manual isnt very clear on this... once again HELP!!!

and BTW ryan4dc... just stay on line for the next few weeks ....lol

Alright now i can see it all better... it is marked 10 in the middle of the marker and to the right is the btdc mark... so now that i have that under control do i set timing while at idle? or is there a special rmp i must be at?

well i got it all dialed in... went to test and FAILED again.. this was the 4th fail for this truck so now i have to have a state approved shop do any repairs before the state will plate it... boy thats gonna be cheap.i might have a friend in the next county, where there is no testing, jump on the title with me.

Sorry to hear about that. I'm at work right now and don't have access to any information on timing. My trucks a little different from yours. Wish you the best of luck if the state shops going to make any repairs. I can only say watch over their shoulder while working on it just in case tech error and you get charged for their mistake. Some shops like that down here. If you got a friend that is willing to jump on the title, make sure he doesn't try anything "funny."
