I've gone through 3 stock rear ends with my old 302. Finally we noticed that the blocks were causing wheel hop, when that happens the rear end goes bang. Or it locks solid and you look like an ass. There is tons of rear ends that are the right width (same as stock mazda) but none have the bolt pattern. To change the pattern its like 500-800 in parts. I'd save and narrow a new GM fullsize rear end. It will cost about $700 to narrow it, but now you have something that can hold the power, is 6 bolt and has rear disc's. Sweet mod and no one will have it.

If you leave it I'd go to the wreckers and buy another stock rear end and get it ready to put in.

i've got a narrowed ford 9" under the back of my mazda. you need to have the axles ordered to the length that you need and locate a race shop with a good reputation, because they can help you out with getting a rearend narrowed.

See i am going to College for Motorsports (aka High Performance and racing) So I think It won't be a problem doing this I just was wnder what stuff was needed for it. By the wounds of it just new axles shafts? You just cut and weld the metal tubes bewtween the differential and hubs, But i can cut a piece out of the middle so then i can just weld 2 tubes together, with the help of some reinforcments.

Anyone know how well maybe a mustang,t-bird, or cougar rearends would fit? They all had a 302 in them at one time! Are they narrowed!

If you run one of those rear ends you will change the bolt pattern. So you'll have a 6 bolt in the front and a 5 or 4 in the rear. Causes huge wheel problems.

ok but if you do a swap on the front, for all that work and probably even more money, why wouldn't he just get a 9" and get it made to the spec's that he needs? Just do it right the first time.

i used a factory lincoln versailles 79 and had to remount spring perches. then later is when i decided to narrow it. this unit is 58.5 inches from back plate to back plate. mustangs are known to have several different lengths. here's a web to go to for widths. dfwmotorsport.com/fairlane/9inchrearends.htm
