Okay, so, I'm wondering if any of you guys own a Dodge truck? Maybe even have a friend with one?

This guy I know is selling his '95 Dodge Ram 1500 for $2500. 5.9L v8! 360 version.

His friend had it in 4wd, I'm not sure if it was low or high, but it blew the auto tranny in it. He says he has another tranny for it, but does'nt want to put it in.

I'm just wondering if its worth buying and what kind of things I should expect to pay for with this damage? New transfer case, torque converter, etc?

Also, it is in minty condition from what he said, but it has like 106,000k miles on it and thats pretty low for '95. How long does Dodge engines really last for?

My pops told me not to do it cause its a gas hog for one, and the engines don't last long and as well as the drivetrain. Now, sure its a nice opinion for a concerned man, but the guy has never owned a DODGE!

i dont like dodge at all but all i hear is tranny problems after tranny problems. havent heard much about the engines though. the little bit that i have heard is they dont last as long as other brands. have no personal experience to back it up though for the engine. ive helped with a few tranny swaps so i know there crap.

They have alot of tranny problems. My friends parents have been through 3 so far on 97. Engines arent horrible but dont get the greatest gas mileage. My buddy has the same motor in his dakota r/t and its got some power.

Lol, got alot of responses pretty quickly!

I've heard they have drivetrain problems frequently. It is an issue I'm weighing on.. Is it just the auto or is it the manual as well?

The guy said it gets about 13 city! If I do buy it though, I'm gonna give her a big tune up and put some stuff on it to help with the gas...

I don't remember if he said it was lifted..

So it looks like the engine will hold out good if you maintain it, but theres no saving the drivetrain! LOL!

What I don't get is that either the guy said it was $1000 for the tranny, or that was plus install. Cause if it was just for the tranny, I would'nt see why spending that much for one and then selling it cheap when it could be fixed in 10 hours work?

Well, I really only consider it cause it is a 4wd truck and its got power and alot of clearance. I just was thinking about using it in emergencies when/IF my mazda cant drive and use it for hunting.

I have owned a few mopars. The 360 motors are great. I've had some stock motors and I have a stroker. Never a problem out of any of them. They are very strong motors and will last a long time. The transmission itself it not bad. The problem with them is the line pressure is usualy to high. That causes them to shift hard and beat themself up. This was the problem they had in mid 90's. They started putting check valves on the trannys to help with line pressure and they have had alot less problems with them. On the newer ones you will hear the check valve when you put it in reverse.

So other then the fact that it is a gas hog, I should go for it and buy it, you think?

Can I install a check valve on this truck myself?

My dad has a 98 dodge ram 1500 2wd with the 5.9L 360 with 142,00 miles on it and we have had no problems with it. We used to tow a 23ft toy hauler with it every weekend almost for 3-4 years and it pulled that no problem. He also has a 2003 cummins turbo diesel that he has had no problems with either. I love Dodges.

Like others have said dodge/chrysler have all kinds of tranny problems. But I wouldn't worry about that to much especially since you a have a new tranny to install and b you don't plan to be driving it that much.
