im trying to find out how hard it would be to make the glass on a 97 civic hatchback open seperately from the body like the 93-95 hatch does

All you need is to find a glass shop the can bore some holes in the glass. Go to a salvage yard and get the hinges, shock mounts and latch pieces from a 93-95 and install them. Finding someone to do the glass would be the hardest part. If you can find someone to cut the glass, it would be bad a** to have it open to the side instead of up.
