My uncle and his wife got WIPED OUT by Katrina, so they relocated to the area just inland from Galveston, where his son lives.
Now they're at my sister's house in Atlanta, wondering if they got wiped out yet again. From what I'm seeing on the Weather Channel and the interweb it's not looking good.

Off the news wire:
Metro Houston faced a wicked blow from Ike this morning. At the Hobby Airport, sustained winds reached 74 mph and gusts peaked at 92 mph. Skyscrapers endured even higher winds this morning than compared to the street level or the airport because of their several 100-foot elevations. Windows have been blown out in several of these very tall buildings throughout downtown Houston.
Wind gusts in Anahuac reached 102 mph and there was a report of a 104-mph gust in the Galveston area.
A very preliminary look tells us that water level rise forecasts did not reach their predicted levels, however, there was still considerable coastal flooding due to surge.
Final official measurements will be investigated during the next few days. It is possible that higher surge levels could be discovered when the surveys are completed especially along the west side of Galveston Bay.
Here's a quick glance at some of the highest surge levels:
Sabine Pass, Texas - 12.54 feet
Lake Charles, Louisiana - 10-12 feet
Galveston, Texas - 9-11 feet
West side of Galveston Bay - early estimation of 14-18 feet
The main reason behind the lower than forecast totals can mainly be attributed to a landfall just slightly farther east along Galveston Island. This did not allow for a pure southeast trajectory of winds channeling into Galveston Bay.
As Ike continues inland, flooding rains and potentially damaging winds have spread inland across eastern Texas. Tomball, Texas has picked up 12.10 inches of rain. Inland tropical storm warnings are in effect for cities as far north as the lower Red River.
Longview, Texas and northwest Shreveport, Louisiana have gusted as high as 56 mph with reports of many trees down, even 2 injuries due to trees falling into houses in northwest Shreveport. Keep your guard up overnight at Ike spins northward with gusty winds and heavy rains.
As Ike weakens Sunday, the flooding rains will shift into eastern Oklahoma, northern Arkansas, southeast Kansas, central and southern Missouri and Illinois. Please be ready to move to higher ground due to flooding and flash flooding Sunday into Sunday Night in the Midwest.
