Steel Wheels Question

Before anyone immediately starts bashing me about this I have searched all the threads i can find on this subject and I havent found a specific answer to my question. It is obvious this is a sore subject on this site but it is a question that I am trying to further educate myself on because I have a certain look i am going for with my truck and a steel wheel would complete it better than a painted or powdercoated milled down Alcoa

I am intelligent enough to know an overall of why streching a 22" tire over a 22.5" steel wheel isnt the best idea in the world since it is now=t made for that application. However, I am looking for a definite answer to why it is so dangerous to be ridden on. Installing it is the obvious dangerous task since it will take a ton of pressure to get it to bead but it seems that after you drop the pressure to a comfortable riding point that the worst that could happen would be like any other tire blowout which is a risk taken by anyone running a low profile tire or any tire for that matter. I have talked to a couple of guys who have been running them for a while and have had no problems. I know this could be purely luck and that is why I am looking for a definite answer to what is most likely to happen if a tire fails while going down the road that would be any different than any other blow out

i dont know any scientific answers but it seems to me that the MAIN issue is mounting them. im sure that is does put some extra stress on the tire but dont know for sure.

all tires have a steel cable running through each side of the edge these cables hold the eeeeh beldstuff that goes across the tire to the other side before the vulcanize it in rubber look at any tire manufacturer site for an exployded view and you see wat i mean

now youre going to stretch the cable ..... and everything atadged to it start to bend out of shape including the sidewhalls and the beltstuff in it
everything starts to rub among eachother ever so slightly wearing unseen hidden inside the rubber untill the pressure is too mush for them to hold together and let go blowing the sidewhall of the tire .

ever heared bout those ford explorers running the bridgestones that misteriously started loosing chunks of thread?
thats about the same thing ford in there infinitive wisdom lowered the tirepressure other than the advice of the manufacturer of the tires to make the ride more comfortable but this made the tire sidewhall flex so mush it heated the rubber and the belting inside and caused chunks fly of the tire blowouts and accidents .

beside that its nearly impossible to mount the tire straight on the rim making you feel like youre in a carnaval ride wearing the shocks and othe suspensionbits faster than usual

i would suggest you buy a set of alcoa's that are reworked to fit the 22 inch tires

^^^ Yes.....and the fact that the tire specifically says DO NOT MOUNT ON 22.5 RIM! That should be explanation enough....

I am definitely planning on running the milled down alcoas but like I said the steel wheel would pull off the look Im going for better than the alcaos would and I already have a set which makes it even harder to spend the money on a new set of semis...lol. I just wanted to know why it is considered so dangerous to others when it seems to me like if it were to blow while in use it would be no different than any other tire application that would only be dangerous if you are hauling ass and it causes you to lose control of the truck.

Thanks to the guys who have responded so far in an effort to better educate me on this subject

Perhaps a question that should be asked would be.

Is there a reason you couldn't re hoop the steelies. That way you could keep the center but run a 22 inch hoop. They have been widening and rehooping rims for years. But I've never specifically looked at a 22.5" steelie to say it couldn't be done.

Maybe somebody will chime in that knows.

Do they make a 22" steel hoop?

I suppose thats a good question too.

I would think that if somebody wanted to run steel semis theres somebody that could re-hoop it.

but perhaps I'm wrong

Seems like Wheel Vintiques or Stockton Wheel should have the technology to do it. I'd like some steelies over some aluminum wheels for a more authentic rat rod look.
