ok since we are on this topic.. ok so i bought a 1980 truck then turned around and bought a 1988 donor truck for sheet metal cab/bed etc. which one do i register into my name. frame/motor 1980 model and body parts 1988 model.
i know the 80 model came frop up north, but did the 88 come from texas with a texas title? if it did, it would be easier to register than the title from up north. just make sure the main dash vin is correct... later, brian
which every one is cheaper to registar and cause less hasslb=e
Technically...you'd register the vin off the frame.
...but I'd register whichever one is easier.
technically a cop isnt gonna be lookin at teh vin on teh frame they are gonna look at teh one they can easily see throught eh window so that would be the one i would register
plus for inspection that what they will look at too.
Right, which is why I'd swap the dash VINs just to avoid the hassle.
I'm just stating what I know as legal in California...but who fools with legality's? I was looking for a '75 and below cab w/ paperwork for my 1/2 ton for a long time, just so I could get out of emissions testing. The truck was a '79, but if I put a '75 cab w/ the VIN on it, and registered it as a '75, I'd get out of it. The truck still would have been a '79 as far as the state is concerned, but I would have 'tricked' them into thinking it was a bonafide '75.
So yes, I agree with you: MOST Inspectors won't/don't know how to look into the true identity of the truck...and I really don't think most even care. I mean, really...who at the DMV/PD/Inspection thingy/Whatever is gonna know a '79 grill from a '75 grill? Or a '73 bumper from an '81? Or an '87 bedside from a '76? If they do...chances are, they're truck nuts too, they know what your doing, but they won't care 'cause they probably did/do/have done the same thing.
As long as the paperwork matches the VIN on the dash, you should be good to go. The less hassle and questions a State worker has to ask, the smoother your transaction will be.
...Unless you get Inspector Dickhead, then you're effed.
wow you payed 10 g for that truck and your going to change the cab
That's what I was thinking...but I wasn't going to say it.
