I remember it like this, the ratio, let just make it easy numbers, call a 4.11 a 4, that means it takes 4 revolutions of your pinion to rotate your output, or your tires once.
so support the rear, turn the pinion and just mark the drum with chalk.
Count the amount of turns you turn the pinion, and walla that number(to one) is your ratio.
you want to make sure both drums are rotating, if only one is turning, it will turn twice as fast through the action of the spidergears contacting the ring gear.
So if only one hub turns it would only take 2 revolutions of the pinion, but it would be a 4 to 1 ratio.
I hope this helps, I'm a horrible teacher unless I can show someone hands on.

ok . i went out and checked again...if i turn both drums at the same time, one full revolution, i get 4 turns of the pinion........so let me guess...lol
i got 4.10 gears???......damn it...lmao

i have a 350 turbo trans right now and a 350 sb in my truck....do you think a 3.42 will be to much? found a 3.42 on ebay for about 280.00
i have a 700r4 in the garage , but it needs a rebuild.....what do you guys think?...

Overdrive is good, I'd probably spend the money on rebuilding the 700, thats just me though, 3 speeds get on my nerves, I just wait and wait for that last shift that never comes

so keep the 4.10 and just use the 700r4 ? or do both 700 and a 3.42 gear?.....i would think my truck would fly on the highway with 3.42 and overdrive...lol
instead of what i have right now...i cant break 55 without the engine sounding like its going to pop...lol

If you have the budget, yes do both..
If you have the power to do it then I like lower(ratio) gears. I have a 67 cadillac 429 limo with 2.94(ish) and it will get 20mpg wile cruising 65-70, and its only a 3 speed tranny

i dont have the power.....my 350 is a stock 2 bolt main engine....i have another 4 bolt main i am going to have built with a mild cam to go in the truck, but for now , my stock motor wiill have to do....
i have a 4 speed trany to , but it came out of a car, not to sure if i could use it in the truck...
