I want another opinion. I took the filler neck of my tank to shorten the hose, and on this is what the filler looks like.

So that totally looks like rust in the picture, but in person it looks more like corrosion. All the white crap in there. Some of it flakes off pretty easy. But what I want to know is if I should try to clean this up and reuse it, or if I should get a new one? And can I even get a new one?

i dont really know if you could clean it or not, id imagine you could, but why not just go ahead and get a new one. everything else on your truck is practically brand new or completely refurbished.

Seth i've seen quite a few like that, it just happens

I guess if you can get a new one cheep go for it

But obviously you'll have a filter to catch anything that would come off, so just keep an eye on your filter

....like i said unless theres alot of loose debris, that'd prolly be no good haha

the question is "if" you can get a new one.

if it flakes off prety easy you might be able to clean it up. i had redone a early 70's motorcycle and thats what the inside of the tank looked like. i got this stuff thats a three stage process, the first step eats all that crap and corrosion away, the second cleans the surface and seals it, and the third is like a rubberized coating kinda. you might be able to get that same stuff and do it in a small bucket or large coffee can. when i did it with that tank, i havent had any problems with it showing through the coating and i did that prolly over 2 years ago almost.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure if I can get a new one. I'm also not entirely sure of the correct name for it to ask for it at the parts store. And I know the guys behind the counter wont know what its called even if I bring it in.

Russel, yes just about everything is new or rebuilt, but doing it that way is getting fucking expensive. If a new one of these costs me $30, thats almost the cost of smog. Or thats taking away from the gear oil, and motor oil I still need, or a windshield, or my valves. And I'm on a limited budget at this point.

Thats a gas tank sealer kit. I actually have some of that crap leftover from when I was building motorcycle tanks. I'll try it out and see if its still any good. I'm pretty sure all that stuff is is kerosene(sp) though.

Since it is just a filler neck I would imagine you could just go to a junkyard and get one off a newer truck. I also think you have the ability to make it work.

I am also concerned that the inside of your tank looks like that as well. It will be alright for a while until you can get the funds to replace it so keep that in your mind.
