I agree with Russ-D also, sounds like a good plan
Just dont rush anything is the main thing to remember.. if youre not comfortable with even the smallest of tasks, stop right then and do some research. Taking anything to a shop is cool, nothing wrong with it at all. But you said yourself youd take more pride in doing it yourself.. so why not go for it. Not everyone can weld and bag a truck, but also not everyone would be screwed over in the end after trying themselves. You gotta start somewhere, don't let others discourage you.. if noone took it upon themselves to do something on their own, would we even have shops?
"give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day. teach him how to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime"
like everyone else has said, buy the tools and take some courses, and go from there. if you took it to a shop now, you'd be stuck from then on taking future rides to shops for work to be done. but if you learn now, the right way, then you can build as many rides you want, what ever way you want.
I am lucky enough to have a skilled friend who has taught/showed me everything on my truck. it is almost complete. I didn't have 4 grand to spend. I only had about a grand. i now have a bodydropped 00 ram on 22z on nitrogen and i think even more impressive than that is the knowledge to do it again. The whole time i was building it all i wanted was the finished product. Now it's 99% done....all i want is to start another one.
