My dad's giving me 4 grand for graduating highschool and I want to bag my toyota. I have very little welding skill but want to learn. Should I take it to a shop to get done or go for it with a couple friends... Id really like to learn but dont wanna screw myself over in the end. What do all you think? Im thinking i wont have any fun unless I can do it myself... But than again dont want something unsafe. And how far will say 3 grand get me if I go for the shop?

Dont blow it man. Seriously If i got 4 grand now i would just let it sit in the bank for when i truly needed it. What you could invest in is some good tools and a box maby a welder and tortch. Then learn things like that for yourself. But if you just take it to a shop and blow all 4 g of it then you wouldnt have really accomplished much. The knowledge of knowing how to do it youself makes it so much greater than taking it to a shop.

Definately gotta take it slow, you can never rush good things. I would definetely say to convert your 6 to a 5 lug now to save you some time later. Some one has stuff up now for sell on ssm 5 lug conversions.

take it from me. TAKE IT TO A SHOP if your not 100% comfortable with doin it yourself. mines finally in the shop gettin done right... after 2 times of havin friends doin it and things not working out. Seriously-- youll have a warranty, youll know its done right, and you can save the money youll spend in the future for other stuff(wheels, interior, paint, etc)

i calculated it... and if id just taken it to a shop the first time after all ive got into the truck now, ida been able to have it bagged and BDd by now.

take ur time... learn your shit... know what works, what doesnt, and do it right the first time. the last thing we need is another hacked truck draggin and fallin apart on the roads.

its your money do what you want! theres no real wrong answer.. if you can stay focused on building your truck yourself then do it! i think every person on this site that is a true minitrucker will tell you when you do that shit yourself you appreciate alot more..im not saying paying a shop to do it wrong. but if you want to work on your truck and have fun,, well building its as good as it gets! draggin it just the cherry on top! and its not a hack job unless you make it a hack job.. if you do end up doing it yourself ask alot of questions.. i personally would never turned down a question from a fellow minitrucker! cant find a answer for your question on here check out one of my buddys sites.. whynotfab.com/forum there tech info and alot of really great guys that will help you threw it..

this is my opinion and thats it! there is no wrong way to build a truck if its done right!

im gonna break it down two ways.... you can be story A or story B. story A, erik took his truck to a well known shop in his local town & paid a nice chunk of change & got his truck bagged & is able to drive his truck everywhere as low as he desires besides when the cops are dicks or he gets stuck and has to air it up fro0m tryin to scrape over a speedbump. erik is a lil weird but likes hearing scraping sounds during the day even though he cant see any sparks. however erik has no issues with his setup & has a shop that actully gives a shit about their name & hooks erik up for being a good & loyal customer.

story B. erik started his shit by himself with some friends who wanted to be apart of something cool, ended up fucking up his frame & a 4link kit, not to mention his tranny & driveshaft. erik then took it to a new low budget shop and paid out significantly less than other shops in town, eriks truck was ready in two weeks & he was driving to the next town over & the 4 link mounts broke spinning his truck around fucking up his bed & sending the truck into a ditch. erik now has to pay to have his truck fixed again now costing basically 2 times the amount of having it done right. ohhh yea... by the way eriks truck story b & story a are both true. story a is my s10. story b is another club in my area where the guys 4link tabs broke & my mazda isnt safe, work was done by the same shop & i now get reamed in the ass for getting it fixed so ill feel safe driving it @ 55mph. id suggest having a GOOD SHOP do it not no shop you have never seen work from or one that recently opened either go with a veteran shop. ive learned my lesson dont follow others footsteps

I would research alot online and do it yourself. Theres no self pride in paying somebody to build your truck. I built my truck off everything I just learned off the internet, and a few friends. Go slow, research alot, and have fun doing it. Just all depends if you want a hobby, or just buy something as a fashion statement.
