LT series or LS series GM motor...LT4 makes 400 flywheel...so about 330-350 wheel depending on the tranny, and an LS2/LS6 makes 400 at the flywheel...but as far as i know that is the shortest that is a practical engine to build

I know Buick used to make a 215 all aluminum 8. Its short both ways. I know they only made like 200hp but they are small enough to fit in an MG B and if it's built right I'm sure it could make some power. Plus they are somewhat rare so it would be pretty unique.

distributors on the 302's are in the front of the manifold.............something you'll have to take into consideration on swap's for hood clearance.............
sbc has distributor in the rear of the manifold and makes plenty of power in just stock trim.
the ls and lt1, c5,c6 swaps can be tedious because of the fuel injection/intake components but make good power as well, same block size as sbc350, but taller intake manifold/filter assmbley.
