yea pretty much word of mouth because people are going to be a little more honest then ads. people will tell you likes and dislikes and they will also tell you potential faults.
I mean look at suicide doors they never really sponsored anyone and or ran huge ads (until recently) their success is based upon word of mouth. I think companies should give their product out to people who are big in the show scene and not the mag scene and tv scene. I know i like to ask people about their setups and if they were using a product from a sponsor they could tell me about it and if they like it or not.

On the sponsorship end, if that is where someones interest lies...you really need to have a professional resume for many companies.
Magazine coverage is always a plus.
I know a guy who picked up a stereo sponsorship, no mag coverage or anything. He just put in good old fashioned hard work.
Competed USACI novice class, and placed at the finals. Contacted some of the companies whose equipment he had ran, and basically got the royal run around....mtx was wanting to throw a couple of speakers his way(maybe).
On a whim, went up and talked to a few guys from sony, and threw out his story, also supplied them with a detailed summary of the shows from the previous year. They were impressed, and he currently one of only a handfull of sponsorships they have...and he got a sweet ride to boot(he gives them their moneys worth though, the car is always somewhere, whethter he is with it or not).
Anyway, I could care less about a sponsorship, and the marketing end point means little to me since I do not buy everything I see. Just thought some people may find the basic run down interesting.

Oh, and I do buy from magazines, just with the internet, it doesn't take long to find real world end user reviews....I just do not get in a rush for a purchase.

D. None of the above. I think that little shop lackey will agree. If you see it on tv or in a mag, well I dont want really anything to do with it. I dont want to use what others already have. I just want to build what other want. Shit if we all bought stuff that we have seen on tv or in a mag then we would all have the same shit, no contrast (well maybe paint). Just build what you want or have someone who can that is qualified. I understand that some stuff, batteries, bags, compressors,etc... cant be but bought. Well screw the rest. Thats just my .02 and I will leave it at that. Oh and just remember something to (I also did it once) EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY wants something for nothing. You know that is what 80% of my phone calls are for is a damn sponsorship. Cant do it. Sorry.
enough rambling. Criticizm welcome also!

I agree with what most of you are saying. When it comes to any high involvement decision you have to do some research after you have been exposed to a particular item.
Companies right now are fighting to get their products into TV, Movies, Magazines, etc. Think about clothing for a second. If Paris Hilton wears Gap clothes to the next awards show, Gaps sales will see an increase. It happens all the time.
Why go you think that in every rap video there is a 300c rolling around. Its not because they are the most expensive, they are the most popular.
I agree with just about everyone is in that most of their decisions to make a purchase come from word of mouth more than anything, why the shift for companies to focus more on TV then sponsorships to the guy and gals like us?
I remember way back when euro tail lights came out. I knew nothing about them at all, just that they looked

You buy what you recognize. If you have seen ads for something on TV, read about it in a magazine, and heard someone mention a particular company than chances are you are going to recognize the product.
I believe statistically you have to hear something in the neighborhood of seven times before you retain it, therefore the more media outlets you are hit with it by, the easier and quicker you are going to retain that information. Anyone who says they don't buy things they see on TV is full of crap.
A perfect exmaple of that type of advertising is the Mother's Power Ball. From a consumer stand point I wanted one before I even knew where to get it. I saw commericals for it, saw advertising for it in different publications, and spoke with people who used it. BAM, I'm sold on the product before I even go to look for it.

John I think the problem your seeing is that everyone in here generally knows what is good and what is bad when it comes to customizing there vehicles, but the simple matter is that these companies are not running shows to reach you or the people that are already in the sport - they are targeting the people that like looking at vehicles and could possible do things to there vehicles themselves using there product if they knew it was easy to install it. There are way more average people buying rims just to look cool then there are customizers buying rims if you know what I mean. We are not necessarily there main clients - unless you are talking about the more in depth stuff like air suspension and what not. -just my 2 cents though-rj (xl-vegas)
