I had mine taken off by a body shop. I was told if anyone ask you did it yourself. I had mine for 3 years and never had a problem. The only people that freaked out was the dealership because it was a brand new vehicle when I took it in for service they saw it. They said your not allowed to do that and I asked why. But they could not give me a reason. They said long as you did it yourself it is your vehicle and your deal.

If your worried about a stupied stearing wheel being legal or not. Personaly I think you should sell your truck and just look at them from now on. Cauz I know in some states bags are Ilegal but you guys still have them. After market mufflers?? windowtint??? do I need to go on?? If you are worried about this why dont you check all the OTHER ilegal things on your truck and repalce them as well??
Just my two cents.

Well i stopped caring about insurance after i cut my frame and bagged it, adding a steering wheel is nothing. Each state has different laws, but most likely it will read like, after 1995 all vehicles must be equip with factory air bag. There is all ways a catch 22. There may not be a code for steering wheels, but there will be a code for modifying from factory setting or something. The point is, figure its illegal, figure out if its worth it, then change it. Come on, stores sell water pipes but everyones knows they smoke weed in them. I would just do it.

This April I got into a little accident that didnt cause any damage to the other persons involved but creased my hood and put a hole in my bumber. Needless to say the airbags deployed and the insurance company totalled my car because just to replace the airbags and dash was going to be $4000 and my car was only worth $7000 (to them). I asked insurance if they could just repair the body and I'll repair the interior since I was going to fibrerglass the dash and get a colorado steering wheel anyways and they said absolutely not. If it came with airbags then it has to have a airbags in it. They said if someone else were to drive my car I would be liable for them if they got into an accident. Thats the insurance end of it not the legal. I hope that helped. And that was in California

Called Progressive today. If I take the airbags off of my policy, it'd cost me less than $20 a year.
