how hard is it to replace the core support on my truck? im putting in a new motor and i want to replace the support while im at it...
The core support of a Mazda is tack welded to the inner fender wells of the front clip. The only way you can remove and replace it is to drill thru the tack welds, replace the bad one with a new one and reweld it back on. If you are crafty you could even figure out a way to bolt it back onto the front clip for easy removal and replacement. Just think, you could even chrome dip that thing!
after the spot welds are drilled out,the fenderwells will look like swiss cheese. they don't look to pretty. save yourself the hassle, and cut the fenderwells off at the fire wall. then just pull out the core support and fenderwells in one piece. make some fender/core braces to replace the fenderwells.

After you have drilled the spot welds out with a spot weld drill bit the holes should look pretty decent. Once you remove the old core support and install the new one you just weld where you drilled, thus filling in the "swiss cheese" looking holes. Body shops do it like this all the time. I dont recall ever seeing them removing the entire front clip just to replace the core support. That does not sound to cost or time effective to me but everyone is there one master at what they do. Some like to do things the hard way while others choose the easy way out.
i hear what you are saying, Leif. i'am going off my personal experience. i did not like the end result when i cut out my core. making new fender mounts worked well for me and gave me more wheel clearance. that was in '99 when i was rolling on 14's with 60 series on my first dawg.
i'm just passing on what i know.
im goin to drill mine out, hoepfully it will work out good.
