So i was rolling down and hill today and downshifted, no big deal not overrevving or anything. Engine feels a little funny, then a hear a little ticking noise. Well the slower i got to a stop the ticking turned into more of a knocking and its quite loud. Coming from what sounds like the front of the block. It does it when idling but louder with a little gas. Its not rythmic like rockers, but god its loud. Any suggestions as to what it might be? I was thinking a rod, a bad piston rings
rod main bearing on the crank, bad rod or bent rod, could also be a loose harmonic balancer, (yes i have seen that make a knocking noise) also could be your oil pump locking up, but i doubt it..
Toyotas don't have harmonic balancers, technically. Its just a main pulley.
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez, you know what i mean... LOL
I can't believe i left that out but i noticed some new oil that had leaked from the oil pump area
New oil pumps are like $30 with a new O-ring and oil seal. They're not very hard to change out either. Might be worth it anyways.
how would i know for sure it was the oil pump bearing? by the way thanks, you guys are quick
No bearing in the oil pump. Theres three gears inside (drive gear, sun gear, driven gear), a seal on the front, and on O-ring on the backside.
I don't know. If its leaking I'd pull it off just to replace the O-ring to get it to seal. Then inspect everything on the inside to see if it looks like it works. If anything looks bad I'd replace it, because if thats not working you're motor isnt being properly oiled, which could cause a teriffic knock. Lol.
