this may be a stupid question. but why do 16" rims rub the tierod ends. when the truck came with 14's or 15's?

yes drop spindles do this. The spindle center moves up and the attachment points stay the same, so the tierod is closer to the rim.

the easiest way to tell if they are drop spindles is to look at the back of them. On a stock spindle, the steering knuckle ( the part of the spindle the tie rods attach to ) is a seperate piece that bolts on the back of the spindle with two large bolts. You can replace them this way. On drop spindles, the steering knuckle is cast into the spindle. These cant be replaced. If you cant unbolt the steering knuckle, you have drop spindles.
