extended cab Mazda chrome mod question

I want to get the factory black paint off the chrome plastic around the rear quarter windows of my '87 ex-cab. I have seen many a Mazda with no paint there but all chrome. How do you do it without screwing things up?

thinner with steel wool will work, dont use an s.o.s. pad though.
