92 Toyota Charging System Problems

My truck keeps killing batteries.So I assume that it was the alternatorswapped that out fired the truck up and the alternator got really hot.But it was holding voltage @13.5V.Then it stopped and was only making power @ 12.2V.Seems like this alternator is fried.What could it be?Thanks
