Bad Mileage in my Mazda!

Im getting horrible gas mileage in my 88 mazda b2200...
It runs really good, but im getting like 400km's to a tank...
The only think thats wrong that is noticable is that from a cold start it smokes for about 30 seconds, and after driving it for a while when you get out you can smell something... not sure if its gas or oil... but it stinks.
Anyone have any idea's why i'm getting such bad mileage??
