more D-50 winter beater help!!

ok i got a 88 dodge d 50 and the guy i got it from lost the key. he messed around with the ignition tumbler that actually turns to make the electrical connections and now its in a bunch of pieces on my floor. If i wire it with some switches to start it will it unlock the steering? he should of jsut left it alone in one piece then i coulda jsut gotten a new key cut but what am i gunna do?
