changing rear ends

i have an 82 fullsize, i busted the rearend in it after building the motor, i guess the 22 year old rearend couldn't hold up. i was wandering if a newer model rearend can be swapped straight up or is there gonna have to be some work to get it to work. thanks in advancedcurt
