help with bondo

does anyone have any tips (besides not using it) so help using bondo. MY problem is i think i sand it down too much, then end up doing like 40 coats of it, and its still not perfect. Im talking on the bedrails, if its just a bedside where its flat with a gradual curve i can get it tight no problem.
