I bought a viper alarm for my truck, model number 5900 i think it is i dont have the box with me right now, I was wondering, if an alarm goes off while im not near does it shut off automatically or would it keep going til the battery dies, if it does shut off, how does it know when to? I just dont understand how that works, because i notice when my trucks off and i have the system running a little bit or even leave the dome light on itll go dead pretty quick.

Viper alarms are set for 30 seconds out of the box. You can change the duration for longer in the programming menu (KEEP YOUR MANUAL!). Depending on what trigger sets it off it could potentiallygo off until the battery dies.
EXAMPLE
Door, hood, trunk trigger: if your door trigger is bad your alarm could potentially go off multiple times till the battery dies, because obviously none of these things should be opened while your alarm is armed (usually only happens after a paint job or on really old cars)
Shock, sound, proximity sensors: Shock sensor is the only thing that comes in the box. All extra sensors, if properly installed will disable them self if they go off multiple times in a row. The sensor will be enabled again after you put the key in the ignition position, remove it and arm the car (drive it)
also if you invest in a LED dome lights and a optima battery you probably wont have any battery issues. Alarms really don't like low batteries and could potentially lock you out of the programming or your truck.
I couldn't tell you how many times I have had cars towed to my shop from peoples houses or even mechanics because they were convinced they had a alarm draining the battery, or causing it to not start. 99% of the time its not the alarm. about 50% of the time its a 10 year old battery and/or its covered with green stuff
