Now I'm confused. i had a 4speed in my 89, the shifter would move to the right, but not up at all...

Yes, they are geared a little different. I don't know what gears are paired with what transmission though. I would imagine the 4spd being a little taller gear due to the fact that the 4spd doesn't have that extra gear.
