Turning just regular air(no AC), compressor engages On & Off

For 1998 Mazda B2500 would I have to retrofit it with the new system?
I'm just asking because I had to do this to my 1989 240SX.

1995 and newer were factory R134a. Plenty of 1994 were also, and maybe some 1993.

So yours is R134a already.
