need some help with my 2.0

this thing came out of my 87 b2000, it ran when i pulled it into the shop a year ago but the guy i bought it from said it needed a head gasket. i just now started tearing into to replace the head gasket and other stuff. now i dont know shit about motors so i took pictures hoping you guys can tell me if something is obviously wrong or needs to be replaced. thanks guys.

looks like you've got a bad case of engine sludge, you have been using Castrol Syntec now haven't you?

The black crap on top of the head is sludge, and as long as there is now metallic flakes in it, your fine. It is caused by the engine getting too hot, having old oil sitting in the engine too long, using poor quality oil, or excessive engine blow by. If you still know the guy you bought it from, ask him if he remembers if it consumed oil while running.
If you actually, "dont know shit about motors," you may want to take the engine to a machine shop and get them to fix it up.
Depending on the mileage, you may want to bore the cylinders, put in some oversized pistons and rings, check the crank for wear (and put in new bearings), replace the valve seals, check the valves, and replace all the gaskets.
If you need an overhaul, prepare yourself for a steep bill
If you do a total engine overhaul, don't forget to break the engine in properly.

yeah bad case of sludge...lol obvi. get the head and block machined down and just make sure you tourqe properly on EVERYTHING i made that mistake

actually for an old motor,that thing doesnt look too bad.it is sludged up but the piston tops look ok as does the valve train.If it runs,and if u dont want to spend a butt load of money on it, u could just try and de sludge it.put a new headgasket on ,change the filter, put 4 quarts of kerosene or a commercial engine cleaner in it,fire it up,run it for 30 minutes or so,drain the kerosene or cleaner out,change the filter,4 quarts of a good multi grade motor oil,tune it up and see what happens.I have seen engines with lots worse sludge than that clean up and keep on running.u might drop the oil pan after u clean it and be sure the oil pump pickup screen is good and clean and the oil pan is free of sludge.bj
