do i need to run a check valve, it seems like everytime i hit the brakes my engine wants to kinda die and my pedal wants to hit the ground....

Yes, there should be a check valve on the vacuum line going from the booster to the engine. They usually have some in the 'Help' section in Schuck's/O'reilley's.
