they did put a 700r4 on a 2.8 and a 4.3. but the bell housings are way off from each other. a 4.3 has a v8 bellhousing and a 2.8 is much smaller at the top. but the internals are the exact same. you can take the clutches, plates, planetary gears, and pistons and everything and swapt them if you want. but the bellhousings are really different. if you want a really good 700r4, try to get an 89' that looks like it has a crack around the fittings where the trans cooler hooks up. but the only thing is, that they only came off of s10's with 4.3's.
