Fuel pressure/pump help wanted

So for FYI, I got the following done this weekend and here are the results:

Installed new mechanical pump. Ran 5/16" fuel line from mechanical pump out to filter. From filter to electric pump in. From electric pump out to regulator in. From regulator out to fuel pressure gauge in. From fuel pressure gauge out to carb.

Without the regulator inline, I was pushing 9psi+ into the carb. Even after warming up, it never reduced. That's when I put the regulator back in. Today, it ran at 5psi strong but the scent of fuel filled the cab. Reduced to 4.5 to see if I can reduce the smell. Truck is still running strong.

Overall, the truck ran like a beast today and yesterday. It would seem that the pump in the back might have failed and the electric pump was trying to do all the work. Now the mechanical does it and the electric supplements it.

Thanks for the ideas on this. You guys rock!

a little late on this, and along the lines of what dropped90 said, most elect fuel pump need to be mounted @ or below the level where the fuel comes out of the tank/cell, and it isn't a bad idea to have a filter inbetween the tank/cell and the pump, and another between the pump & the regulator..

glad to hear ya got it running better.

Crap. Misworded.
From the tank to the filter to the mechanical to the electric to the gauge to the carb. That's the way it is. I'd never put a pump at risk. Poor pump
