i saw this on a couple other forums i frequent and thought i'd post it here. please take a minute out of your day to help on an issue that is very dear to me and i suppose a lot of other people out there. i took those points and added on to it to make a letter to pelosi and all my other representatives to urge them not to pass this. this whole thing has me in an uproar.

Dear Fellow Enthusiast,

As a SEMA Member Company, we have received an Urgent Legislative Action Alert from the association. You may be interested in this legislative alert and the possible impact it will have on your hobby.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) is a non-profit trade association composed of more than 6,800 member companies involved in all aspects of the automotive industry, from manufacturers to car clubs and race teams.

The SEMA Action Network (SAN) protects your hobby from unfair or unnecessary legislation on national and local levels. Through distribution of information and the collective voice of automotive enthusiasts and businesses, the SEMA Action Network has successfully impacted legislation concerning scrappage laws, equipment standards, registration classifications, emissions regulations, and more.

The following information is directly from SEMA. If you would like to contact the lawmaker, follow the instructions in the alert.

Thank you for your time,
Your Friends at Summit Racing Equipment

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

This is such typical D.C. short-sighted bandaid policy making. I hope this gets shot down, it's an even worse idea than the bailouts.

so very true. i just thought about the fact that if this passes, itll affect mazdas too. depending on the year they are around 20 years old which would probably be the cutoff year or possibly even 15 years.

Man f*ck the gov't and their half-assed ideas to make the country some money just so that they can go waste it again. Bush alone spent 11.3 trillion dollars while he was in office. Yeah thats right, TRILLION. This is pretty stupid because they wont pay much for the classics anyway even if people do scrap them

Sent my letter! It's already hard enough to find an old Mazda. Why make it harder for those of us who want them and will restore them into good running vehicles.

thank you to everyone who took the incentive to voice your opinion on this matter. i just read on the Japanese Nostalgic Car(a killer magazine for anyone who loves vintage japanese cars) website that the "cash for clunkers" program was defeated and removed from the bill. this made me feel a little better about how our government is formed and shows that we do have a voice on certain matters.

is there one of those online petition sites for this bill/law, i live in canada, but anything to preserve old car is a worthy effort. I have no problem with getting old chevy berettas and buick regals off the road, but some cars just shouldn't be scrapped.
Jay Leno brought up a good point:
when a classic car was produced, a certain amount of energy was used to produce that car.
when you destroy and recycle that car, more energy is used
then when a new car is made to replace the old car, even more energy is used
therefore it is more efficient to just get an old car road worthy and rdrive it.
