okk here we go. I am a avid 2 stroke fan, due to there simplicity, how cheap they are, and how responsive they are to mods. You can go buy a new 250 4 stroke for 6 grand, or u could buy a old 250 2 stroke, for 2 grand, put anouther 2 into it, and have a bike that will smoke 4 strokes all day long. Like elbine said, pro's are racing 4stroke because they get paid, AND they have power all the time(thats why the use them on tracks) Any where else 2 strokes still dominate ( enduro races, drag races, sand, ect.) I'm a fan of thumpers if your riding woods or track ALL THE TIME! People are just lazy and to carless to upkeep their 2 strokes, because they take more maintenence. Lazy people ride 4 strokes because you can beat the shit out of them all day, do no maintenence and still be able to ride. So i guess it comes down to what kinda person you are, and what your trying to do. I will always be a 2 stroke rider, and i cant wait for the new fuel injected 2 strokes to come out so they can walk over the 4 strokes on the tracks again to!!

Good ole 1990 RM250 here. Four strokes are ok with me for trail riding(XR250R) but I sure miss the sound of a well tuned 250 going through the woops being piloted by a pro. A local race I went to was dominated by 4 strokes. There was a class for "fast 50s". Close your eyes and you could not tell the difference between the 50s or 450s out there. It was refreshing when the 80 expert class raced. Sounded great!!

Gotta pipe in. I used to race an ol yz125....nice bike. It was two stroke but even back then CA was starting to outlaw 2strokes in certain areas. Now there are lakes and tracks and riding areas that do not allow 2strokes. I can't speak for Canada but if you are going to be seriously doing some public riding check into the epa rules and what not. May suck to get a kick ass 2stroke that you can only ride in your back yard.

heres my $.02
i have a 01' blaster 200 in the garage, 02' banshee, 02 Raptor 660 and a 03' YZF 250 bike.
The 2strokes are fun as hell on open trails and powerlines and will do doghnuts like no other on the asphault but for woods riding and hill climbing i wouldnt have anything other than a 4stroke.
2strokes are cheap to rebuild but damn it sucks to refresh the topend every winter so you can ride the next season. 4strokes do cost more to rebuild but it isnt often they have to be done. my raptor is a 686 bigbore and the YZF is a 263 bigbore now but it wasnt because it was wore out, i just wanted to piss away money on something and that happened to be what i spent it on. i think a topend rebuild kit for the blaster is like $80 and a stock topend kit for the raptor is bout $150 but they last WAAAAYYYYY longer than the 2strokes IMO. and i hate fouling damned plugs!!!
Also you should check around your house if you ride at "riding parks", several here dont allow 2strokes anymore.
i own both, i like both but if i had to choose one over the other, id take my thumpers anyday.
also, you dont have to go out and buy a brand new bike. i bought my YZF from a local shop and had a 263 bigbore, ported head, stage2 hot cam, full titanium FMF exaust and new suspension put on it and i have less than $3k in it and i can spank my banshee's ass at the dragstrip

i got an old skewl 1991 CR250 and love it, but only thing is, about every 4-5 times i ride, it needs top end re-work. 4 strokes are good trails and stuff when you need the torque, but I love the powerband of a good 2 stroke.
