This is ridiculous. I give up I hate my truck and I just want out. Something I have been trying to do for so long. I have over $8,000 in my truck now I had brought it to the shop last week to finally get it certified and etested. It failed certification due to some rust problems and also failed etest. Well, I brought it home pulled out the interior and replaced all of the floors and wheel wells and did it all properly. I also pulled off the pacesetter headers and put on my stock exhaust with the exhaust recirculation stuff. This exhaust came on the truck and the full stock system is pretty new maybe a year or two. Well I brought my truck back today and its all done certification wise but once again it failed the etest. I just cant stand this anymore I have absolutely no money and am in major debt cause of this and its still not on the road. The truck did have heet in it btw and runs great. Anyways the mechanic did work on the carb and stuff and it still failed. So now I owe another $300 to the mechanic and its still not on the road. He wants to put a new cat on it even though it has a fairly new cat like 2 years old max. He told me about $250 plus labor for the cat. I can't afford it so I just am out. I have no clue what to do I have no money whatsoever and I have no vehicle now. I am stuck I hate this and I just don't know what to do I have exhausted all of my resources.
I just can't believe that something with a fully rebuilt motor and tonnes of new parts would cause this much trouble. I just can't take it I need some serious advice, I am 17 have no money, no vehicle, and tonnes of debt. I'm just waiting for things to get fair and have been for the past year and a half...
Help me, what can I do?
Zac
Not that I can much but can you give any additional info on what part(s) of the etest that your truck failed on. I guess what I am getting at is if it failed at a higher RPM you might be able to rejet the carb 1 size smaller (again, I am no expert) But if your problem is to much of one type or another emission, that might clue one of in on what is wrong. Or more importantly what can be changed without spending a bunch of money. I think there is a thread on here some where of your earlier issues and/or what your current setup is.
You stated that the mech did some work on the carb. So I should assume that it is not fuel injected. Can I also assume you are running the stock carb and all the stock emission crap on the passenger fender? I don't know Canadian laws that well but I have to ask.... would your truck pass "visual" inspection with a weber carb? I only ask because I have read repeatedly that the stock carb is poo (to quote hocbj I believe). Webers have interchangable jets and I know for a fact there is someone on here that would probably loan you a jet or 2 for just the cost of shipping. But, again that is assuming the visual issue.

time.
It failed on Hydro Carbon PPM at the higher RPM and it also failed the CO% by almost 1000% higher then the allowed rating.

Hmm. How old does your truck have to be to not need to be smogged in Canada?
Just curious if the end is near, or perhaps you should find a title of an '86.
Disclaimer, I was kidding.
Zac: Cheap possible solutions. If truck failed hydrocarbons it is running too rich. Common problems in these trucks.Have ur mech set time up to 5% BTDC,regap plugs to .035 .If u PM me an address,I will send u a Kand N low restriction filter for the truck IF u r running the stock Nikki carb and air cleaner. If ur Co is that high, cat may be bad.Have u changed your o2 sensor.?That could explain part of ur trouble.BJ
Bump.RU sure ur mechanic is OK?I dont know what kind of "work" u can do on that pile of poo Nikki carb.It is all sealed upand there is no way to rejet it.If u want to try it I will send u the Nikki off my 2200.U will have to use ur EGR valve but mine passed inspection here and it is complete otherwise.BJ
After you spend $400 trying to repair it after failed e-tests,you get a conditional pass.
It used to be a 20 year cut off,but they've now permanently changed the cut off to 1988 and older.
Well that sucks. I was hoping he had an out. I knew that TX gives some sort of allowance if you spend a certain amount and still fail, but Canadian laws are lost on me, eh.
Hey guys, I'll try to answer some questions. Ok, well there is no age cutoff now and as for the $400 conditional pass, apparently that does not apply to me as it only applies to people who are the same owner and have had it tested before. In other words if it was my second time testing it (2 years after the first) then I would be given a conditional pass after $400 but I'm not so that is out.
Well in the meantime I have gotten my truck back with a trip permit and now have been driving it.
I am having a really big problem with it stalling. When I had brought it to the shop it was stalling when there was no gas being applied when the motor was cold. And so for example I would be driving down the street and go to brake around a corner and therefore have no gas applied and it would die. But it only would do it a few times till it was warm. I now got it back from the shop and the mechanic said that there is like a heater in the carb and its supposed to heat the carb up but the switch doesn't work so the heater doesn't turn on. Which he said was the problem with the stalling. So He is now trying the find the right like heat sensor switch. In the mean time I took it out last night to drive and it has gotten much worse. It stalls any time the gas is completely off and never gets over it once it heats up. What ever he did really screwed it up and so now I really don't know what to do.
This mechanic is reputable we have gone there for about 10 years....
I'm going to see if he will do anything about it but I think he changed some setting on the carb and it really screwed it up. Do you have any ideas why it might be dieing?
