Timing is most likely off and ur draining everything down. There's a couple dowels to align the cam gear on, are you on the proper one with the arrow and the number? I know it seems so simple, but I over looked it on my 1st build, as I was in a mad rush to get it running.

I had to get another cam and head had a lot of pitting and cam was worn badly didn't have gear on it so. I put it together like the Hayes manual said with dowlpin 1200 and 1 on the cam gear up
I bought Bosch plugs for it is it possible there to long

Ok, ur cam gear should be good then, and Im guessing the dizzy gear and mark are all lined up too.
If the plugs were too long, youd hear em hitting. NOT a pleasant sound.
