i have a 86 single cab long bed i just got from my dad. it was his daily for a while but its been on a downward spiral for a while. there is this horrible clunking noise when taking off. was told the drive shaft was f**ked. anyone ever mess with these? i was thinkin it was the u joints but someone told me it could be the carrier bearing is plum wore out. any help would be great.

also how hard is it to remove these staked in u joints??

if tis the hangar bearing you will have to unbolt it from cross member and get it changed out. i took mine to a shop to get it done. the new hangar bearing is about 25? fom oreillys

U Joints on these trucks are not to difficult to do your self at home. The carrier bearing can be done at home with a gear puller and some creativity. Your best bet would be to prop up the truck on jack stands, crawl under there and see if the u-joints have any noticeable play in them. The carrier bearing usually squeals when it goes out where as the u-joints make more of a clunking noise.
