notch construction....

OK Ive seen a post on here before about how the notch goes together, but i cant seem to find it again.... and I'm sure when I get the notch (waiting for it to get delivered) I'll be able to answer my own question, but I'm anxious and just want to know what I'm doing before I do it.

Does the top part of the notch go on top of the sides of the notch... or inside of the sides of the notch?
