Ok heres the deal i know where a FE3 engine out of a '96 Kia Sportage is and ITS FREE!!!! the only thing that worries me is that it has low compression, and thats the reason the pulled it and put in a new one. Does anyone know anything about rebuilding these engines or what might cause this low compression? Its complete all that is missing is the starter and its already pulled out of the vehicle. Thanks to all in advance!!!
I WORK FOR KIA MAN. i will look into this for you
thanks man i appreciate it!
I thought this was answered earlier...headgaskets, rings and the such will cause low compression...its a across the board with any engine. You should look into a simple standard rebuild for it if it has such low compression that they pulled it and are giving away for free. Might even have to overbore....Im sure there is a kit out there somewhere for that....dont sign up but just look on the kia boards (yes they are out there as well) and find you a rebuild kit.
cant remember the name of the one I was on for a bit but I didnt spend that much time there really anyways....I am MUCH more into my truck really.
but I would suggest that, looking up a rebuild, getting it to you and start a tear down of that motor...and for gods sake, replace the timing belt! It shouldnt have to be said but I have known people that reuse the old one and 20k miles later...there goes a basically brand new motor
im definaley going to replace the timing belt, also getting a gasket kit for it. basicly im just waiting to move into my new house at the end of the month before i tear it down, someone suggested a leak down test but im not sure what that is.
gotta have it in a car or some way to run it for a leakdown...pretty much all it is is sticking a gauge in a sprkplug hole, crank over 4-5 times.....read pressure on gauge. Each cylinder should be pretty close in readings, good sign that you have good cylinders, good headgasket, valves sealing propely....etc
oh ok ive never heard it called a leak down test i thought that was called a compression test but whatever lol could i take a impact and turn it while checkin each cylinder? ]
^^^^^the mech here said the same thing man.
on a leak down test u need to spin it over several times until the gauge reaches its higest reading then watch the gauge fir awhile to be sure the compression doesnt leak down over time.A good tight engine should be able to hold a compression reading for awhile before the pressure bleeds out past rings ,valves etc.if not,u need to go ahead and rebuild it.bj
