if it's blowing black smoke while driving with no tick or knock then it's bad oil rings. That's what was wrong with my truck. We rebuilt my head before we tore down the bottom end,and rebuilding the head didn't solve the smoke,until we discovered the oil ring in the #3 cyl had a hairline crack. The smoke would stop once it reached operating temp and the ring expanded.
