Ummm...so...things aren't looking so good for the Caddy right now...

For the past several weeks my mechanic and I have been trying to locate the cooling problem my car has been having. After figuring out my cooling fans were not working, causing the car to run hot around town, but cool down on the highway, we rigged up a manual switch that activates my fans.

The fan has helped keeping the temperature down at the half way point on the needle and the car runs much smoother and less sluggish than when it is hot. (By hot,I mean warm,in the upper ranges of the normal section,it hasn't overheated into the red).

I've noticed my car has been going through coolant as well. It has a mysterious random leak from the back of the engine, where it pours down the transmission and all over the ground leaving a nice big green puddle. While driving the car, I can sometimes smell coolant through the vents, even at normal engine temp, and can sometimes smell coolant out the exhaust and have a little white cloud.

The strange part is,the car runs perfectly fine. It doesnt seem like there's anything wrong, and all it does is eat and piss coolant.

I'm really starting to think it's my headgasket that may be gone....if that
s the case,I cannot afford to repair it. That will run me $1500-3000. I still owe over $4000 on my car loan and have no income til August...

I don't know what to do. My car has been in and out of the shop for the past 4 weeks trying to figure out what the hell is wrong and we can't find where it's leaking from.

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I also need a good excuse to get rid of my car since I need a work truck...

Well, I would say whats going on now is a pretty good excuse.

Presureize the cooling system when its warm and look for the leak. I think you can rent the tool at a shucks or auto zone.

there is a die kit to check for exhaust / oil in the coolant. that would help narrow it down to a head gasket. or do a leakdown test

theres this shit we used it was like a big tablet (pill) we crushed it up and put it in the cooling system, a friend of my told me about this, andwe tryed it on another friends g/f's vw cabriolet and it worked, we bought them at the GM dealership they weret expensive at all, we bought a few of them and put 1 in and then put another 1 in for safe measures so if you go this route get your self 2-3 of these things

pepper works the same way it just clogs the leak and does not burn up in the coolant.... i have never used but friends have and it works....

We've used 2 things of "Stop Leak" in it already and that hasn't done anything. I also recently had my coolant flushed and replaced. It doesnt seem to be leaking from any hoses or anything,it just seems to be coming out of the back of the engine.

Not to self...don't buy any more American cars built in Germany. This thing is insane to repair.

I replaced the thermostat and that was $125 just for the t-stat and 4 hours to do it. Front wheel bearings are $280 each and the rear air struts are $290 each.

Also, when it leaks,it does it randomly. It leaks while I am driving because you can see a trail of coolant and then it pisses out when it's parked. It only leaks when it is running. I can park it somewhere with it running and it'll leak, then I can move it somewhere and park it and it won't leak. It's weird, but it's always from the back of the engine.

I don't even know where the coolant overflow is because it doesnt seem to have one. However, the coolant gets so hot sometimes,it's boiling and if I release the rad cap,you can see it just steaming out.

yeah,I did the pepper thing too. I took like half a pepper shaker and ground it up into an empty tylenol container and then dumped it in and put some more coolant in and took it for a drive.

So far I have pepper and 2 things of StopLeak in it and it still pisses. It's gotta be coming out of the back of the heads or something.
