Yea id go 5.3 and if u find yourself needing a lol more... Get some bolt ons... Theyll add hp and mpg... As long as your foot will let it any way...

Just don't go all into that 8.1 thinking it's a monster LS engine, I'm sure you know it's got more in common with a traditional big block just has that goofy coil pack junk going on and about three dozen sensors to worry about.
They will pull down a goddam house though no doubt. But if you buy one try for late 2003-up production, apparently the early ones (2001-early 2003) had a number of..."issues"

Yeah, I read that before. Even still, it beats the hell outta the 7.5 I was gonna put in it.
I think I read somewhere that the 04-05's didn't have EGR...which, from the clearance shots I've seen of these engines stuffed into squares, would be a plus.
